PRESENTED BY ABIGAIL JANZEN

This year Arte Americas is proud to present their Artist in Residency, Central Valley artist Abigail Janzen. This was made possible by the California Arts Council, Artist’s in Community Grant. Through this grant, the artist will be curating the community outdoor ofrendas for our Dia de los Muertos celebrations for CalaGala 2019. The artist will be making decorations and providing community workshops inspired by the cultural significance of Dia de los Muertos onsite, as well as in Madera County, and Tulare County. Abigail has roots in Chihuahua, Puebla, and Atwater and has been an active volunteer and artist participant at Arte Americas since 2003.

MINI SHADOW BOX ALTARS

Participants will learn about traditional elements of the ofrenda in miniature size to take home with them. All ages, up to 25 participants for a 1-hour workshop. Youth 12 and under must have an adult participate with them for supervision safety. Childcare will not be provided.

WEARABLE CARDBOARD SUGAR SKULL MASKS

Using easily accessible items like cardboard, paper, and paint, participants will put together and decorate their own mask to take home and use for November 1st & November 2nd for Dia de los Muertos. All ages up to 25 participants for a 1-hour workshop. Youth 12 and under must have an adult
participate with them for supervision safety. Childcare will not be provided.

This workshop will offer participants a chance to learn how to do their own face painting in the style of sugar skulls in preparation for November 1st & 2nd celebrations for Dia de los Muertos. up to 25 participants for a 1-hour workshop. supervision safety. Childcare will not be provided.

New Session Kid’s Art School

The next session of Kid’s Art School starts soon~ Sign Up Today!

Our Art Classes have been a huge success! We are offering a 6-class session from 4pm to 5:30pm on Fridays, starting May 3rd and ending on June 7th.  It’s only $60 for all 6 lessons and MCAC Members receive a 10% discount!

Returning students can bring their art kit, or we have art kits available for purchase in our Gift Shop! *Note: Purchase of art kits is not required for classes.

2019 Poetry Out Loud County Competition!

About the Poetry Out Loud Competition:The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with the California Arts Council to support 2019 Poetry Out Loud, a FREE high school program which encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This dynamic program helps high school students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, learn about their literary heritage, and compete for more than $100,000 in awards. 

FREE Kids Art Classes

Due to funding cuts for the Arts, the Madera Elks Lodge have partnered with the Madera County Arts Council to offer FREE Art classes for 3rd-6th grade students from Adams, Lincoln, Dixieland, and Easton-Arcola Elementary Schools.

There are two 5-class sessions:

December 21st to January 18th or January 25th to February 22nd

  • Each student will receive an art kit to use in the class!
  • Classes are on Fridays from 4pm – 6pm.
  • Lessons are geared towards teaching art history and/or art theory with each project inspired by a famous artist.
  • Space is limited to 35 students.

The first session is scheduled as follows:

12/21/18 – Christmas Card Painting
12/28/18 – Roy Lichtenstein –  Pop Art 
1/4/19 – Vincent Van Gogh – Starry Night Project – Acrylic painting 
1/11/19– Georgia O’Keeffe – Watercolor Painting
1/18/19 – Henri Matisse – Soft Sculpture and Collage

The second session is scheduled as follows:

1/25/19 – Valentine’s Day Card Painting
2/1/19 – Roy Lichtenstein –  Pop Art 
2/8/19 – Vincent Van Gogh – Starry Night Project – Acrylic painting 
2/15/19 – Georgia O’Keeffe – Watercolor Painting
2/22/19– Henri Matisse – Soft Sculpture and Collage

Summer Arts Program for High School Students
